In recent years, a large number of circRNA molecules have been found to play biological roles through various pathways. The groundbreaking study of natural circRNAs as translational templates for direct translation of peptides or proteins has made it possible to use circRNAs as vectors to develop therapeutic drugs for diseases. Compared to linear RNAs such as mRNA, the closed-loop structure of circRNAs allows for a substantially longer half-life of their presence in the organism, and this stabilized structure is extremely advantageous for the sustained expression of functional proteins/peptides.
